My Smart has been coughing a bit lately. Hasn’t wanted to start, and has gone in emergency mode a few times. The issue was found in the mass air flow sensor.

It also got a Oil and filter change, as there was less than 1000km left before service was required.
I had a feeling that one of the rear wheel bearings needed replacement, as it had begun to hum.
The fellows at Smartcars in Ringsted came to the same conclusion. The rear left wheel bearing got replaced. They also found a leaking rear left brake cylinder while it was on the lift.
They also found a few things that will need attention in the future. One of these is a new oil pan, but it’s not needed yet.
Picked it up after work, and drove back home in what seemed like a different car.
No check engine light, no coughing, and no emergency limp mode.
In stead it accelerated nicely and ran smoothly with no noticeable exhaust odours.
I suspect that the mass air flow sensor has been a bit off, long before it got bad enough to cause an engine light 💡
Bonus – SmartcarsDK couldn’t get a new MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow Sensor) the same day, so they borrowed one from one of their own cars, while a new one was inbound. At the same time they fitted it in min free of charge.
That’s pretty good service. I’ll be back later and have it replaced again, this time with the new new one.
And the new rear wheel bearing lets me hear the birds sing again, while driving with the top down.
Evening update:
Drove a guest to the train station (no not THAT train station) late this evening, and unfortunately the engine only started at the end of the second attempt.
This means that we are going to need another visit to Smartcars, as the starting issue still isn’t found.
