The Smart Fortwo gets itself a new battery

It’s time for a new battery in the Smart Fortwo. However I must admit that I’m impressed, as I find out that the battery is the original one, it left the factory with.

The battery compartment is hidden away in the floor under the passengers footwell.

To change the battery you must lift the carpet away. It folds nicely up in front of the passenger seat.

Here you will find two plastic screw clips, that can be removed with your fingers.

The battery is hidden under the styrene triangle infront of the passengers feet. This is also where you find the tyre inflation kit, and the tow eye.

Lift out the big styrene block, and the battery will appear.

After removing the big polystyrene block in the passenger footwell, you have access to the battery.

I was surprised to find the original battery, as usually these don’t last that long (anything over 4 years is a gift).

In order to remove the battery you just need to loosen the two 10mm screws on the terminals, and the 10mm bolt on the metal crossbar.
When fitting the new battery do it in reverse.

I found out that the ventilation connection had been broken, but luckily there was no sign of leakage.

The new battery was completely sealed, and doesn’t need ventilation. I left the tube in place, so that water wouldn’t get in from below.

In other guides they recommend that half the interior is stripped out, but it wasn’t necessary in my case. The old battery slid out, and the new one slid in without any issues.
